Porcelain laminate veneers are arguably the most aesthetic means of creating a more realistic and beautiful smile. They require minimal amount of tooth reduction (approx 0.5 mm ), therefore, they are a more conservative restoration than a crown. Using veneers, it allows us to alter the tooth position, shape, size and color. Not only are they the alternative for all aesthetic abnormalities but are really an amazing restoration when they are the treatment of choice.
What you need to know about Veneers
- Since they require about .5mm of the tooth reduction, Porcelain Laminate Veneers are not a reversible form of dental treatment.
- Occasionally the preparation of a Porcelain Laminate Veneer does not require the use of a local anesthetic. But, for those patients that are particularly sensitive or anxious, a local anesthetic can be used.
- The laboratory time required for the fabrication of a Porcelain Laminate Veneer is about two weeks.
- Between your initial visit and the insertion visit, you can expect some sensitivity to hot and cold. This is absolutely normal and is caused by the removal of a small portion of the enamel covering of the tooth. This sensitivity should dissipate after the placement of your Porcelain Laminate Veneer.
- When we place your laminate veneer (second visit), you may opt to do it with or without local anesthetic. This second visit is typically a little longer in length. The laminates are placed with a light sensitive resin which is hardened by using a white light.
- Once in place, your veneers are very durable and will resist most of the forces placed upon them by a normal diet. Porcelain has great crushing strength but poor tensile strength. Therefore, you should avoid anything that will twist the laminate. For example, opening hard shell nuts with your teeth is probably not the best idea. As with most things, common sense should be used.
